To renew your Working Holiday Visa (WHV) in Australia,
one of the key requirements is to provide 13 payslips (88 days) or 26 payslips (6 months) from
full-time work. However, the government's website can be unclear
about what exactly qualifies as "full-time" work, which can
make the process confusing.
The definition of full-time work can vary depending on the
job type. For many roles, full-time employment is typically
considered to be between 30 and 40 hours per week. Here are
some examples of different job categories and their respective
full-time hour requirements:
Tourism & Hospitality (Northern/Remote Australia, from 22 June 2021):
Full-time is usually 38 hours per week.
Plant & Animal Cultivation (Regional Australia): Full-time is typically
30-35 hours per week.
Piece Rates in Horticulture (Regional Australia): Considered
full-time at around 30-35 hours per week.
Fishing & Pearling (Regional Australia): Full-time may range from
30 to 38 hours per week.
Tree Farming & Felling (Regional Australia): Full-time is generally
35-38 hours per week.
Mining (Regional Australia): Full-time is usually 38 hours per week.
Construction (Regional Australia): Generally considered full-time at
38 hours per week.
Bushfire Recovery (Declared Areas, after 31 July 2019): Full-time may vary,
typically around 35-40 hours per week.
Flood Recovery (Declared Areas, after 1 Jan 2022): Typically 38 hours per week.
COVID-19 Healthcare (Anywhere in Australia, after 31 Jan 2020):
Full-time is generally considered to be 38 hours per week.
As long as your payslips show that you’ve worked the requisite hours for
your job type, you’ll meet the full-time work requirement. But what if
you worked fewer hours in certain weeks?
In those cases, the good news is that if you’ve worked part-time over
several weeks, you can combine your hours to count as one valid payslip
for visa purposes. For example, if you worked 18 hours in one week
and 20 hours in another, the total of 38 hours would count as one
full-time work week. This flexibility helps ensure that you can still
meet the requirement even if your hours vary from week to week.
To make the process even easier, we’ve created an online calculator
that will help you track your progress. Simply select your work type
and input the hours you’ve worked, and the calculator will tell you
whether you’ve already met the requirement or how many more days of
work you need. This tool simplifies your work tracking and ensures
you're on the right path to meeting the visa renewal conditions.
By using our calculator and ensuring that your total hours meet
the required standard for your job type, you can confidently work
towards renewing your WHV.
